The 12 years following the Civil War was a time of rebuilding the war-torn South. Under this plan southerners lost the right to vote and hold public office.
Freedmen’s Bureau-established by the U.S. government to help Blacks after the Civil War.Found jobs and provided education for Afro-Americans.

Legislating
Ex-slaves, Northerners, and Southern Unionists ruled the South immediately following the end of the Civil War.
These groups passed laws that created free tax, supported public schools, fair taxation and women’s right to own property.
The Union Army provided protection for the groups.

Reconstruction Ends
Reconstruction ended in 1877 when the last Union Troops were pulled out of the South. By 1877 White Democrats ruled all Southern States and Segregation laws and terrorist organizations (KKK) stripped African Americans of Civil Rights.
